Somewhere over the rainbow...again

First, I was singing this song randomly one day. Then I think I heard it on the radio and posted the lyrics. Then today at Comic Con, the Lost Panel plays a version of a Hawaiian I believe. Many things going on there. First, I thought the Lost panel was just a panel with little insight, basically true, but on further inspection from the Lost Podcast I went to, and now with this song, there were many little and possibly big things, you just had to be thinking that way.

I just want to discuss the song. I have read how some have analyzed how there are many themes similar to the Wizard of Oz and Lost. I am not going to try and even discuss them all, I couldn't if I try, but I couldn't help but think of how this song is of the most recognized in the Wizard of Oz. But the Lost panel didn't just play Dorothy or Judy Garland's version, they played one apparently by Israel, who was Hawaiian! Not only was this very sneaky, played at the end, but it was a way to kind of say "thank you" to Hawaii-where Lost is shot, AND a way as a throw to some of the themes seen in Lost from the Wizard of Oz. Clever, very clever, I wonder if anyone else got that? It worked too because there was a very moving montage before. Once this song came on, I wanted to cry, but didn't. The montage was beautiful, the special guest who came at the end, Dominic aka Charlie, and that this is the final year, and that the producers say this is their last Comic Con was a little emotional.

My other question is, why is this song keep coming up for me. As we were driving our way home, there was a billboard that said something about where rainbows are found. Maybe it means nothing. But I can't help but wonder if it means something more?

Generations of Women

WOW! Talk about inspiration! I hope I always have the excitement that I feel, with all the ideas in my head with this book. But it is SO much more.

Yesterday, I had a swap meet sale with a coworker and a lady that I meet at a rummage sale we did. Long story, I had seen this book, I believe, briefly, within the lady's stuff, but didn't think about it again. I saw Whoopi Goldberg and I am guessing her mom, which upon further inspection later really think that is Whoopi's mom, and her presumably on the cover.

Anyway, as we were packing to leave, I saw the book again. I looked at it some more and was like WOW! I asked the lady how much she wanted for the book. She said, "Take it." I asked her if she was sure. She said, "Yes, I already have another one." I was gushing about how I liked the book, and she said that she liked it as well.

So today, I am checking out the book, and again, WOW WOW WOW WOW! The photographer, Mariana Cook has done other books like this. Jamaica Kincaid wrote the introduction.

The basic premise of the book is photos of different generations of women, hence the title, "In Generations of Women: In Their Own Words." Then, like the second part of the title, are the women in the photo writing about their relationships with the other women in the photo.

As I am looking at the book, and thinking about my mom and aunt, I realize I do not have a photo with BOTH of them together. Then I think about how the portraits are personalized as far as where the women are sitting, wearing, etc.

I just started to write now about if I could have taken a picture with two important women in my life, where would we be, what would we be wearing, etc.

I am sharing this because of the inspiration this has given me to take and journal about the relationships I have with others. Also, to hopefully inspire you to get and/or look at this text as well as the others, and hopefully to take a photo with people who are significant in your life and to have everyone, including you, to write about those relationships.

I am thinking, if I only had a photo of me with my mom and aunt, and just a few words from each of us about our relationship how I would treasure this. No artful page, although I think the photo itself can and is art, but as far as scrapbooking stuff that is put on the page, just photos and words, as Ali Edwards, a "celebrity scrapbooker" would say. In other words, something meaningful can be created simply.

Homework: Go find a picture of you with someone or others that are important to you. Or take a photo. Then, write about the relationship(s) you have with that person or persons. Have the person or people in the photo do the same-share the photo to maybe trigger that particular memory, but you do not have to share the photo for this to work. Then blog it, scrapbook it-it doesn't need embellishment, Facebook, Tweet (might need several Tweets), email, type, write, journal, Photoshop, whatever, just get it "printed" in some way.

If you are still reading this far, and did this, please post a comment with a link here so I can see what you did.

Being in the Present...

Today has been a difficult day. However, the comfort that I have received, I believe from God has brought me some peace. First, I talked to a parent today of a student I had taught who is going to be promoted to the next level of school. I was ready to keep moving and get back to work, and finish our talk, she reached out to me and said, from her heart she wanted to thank me for everything I did for her son, and said that I am a good teacher. During the conversation, we hugged a couple of times.

This was significant for many reasons. One being that during the year I was teaching her son, they were going through difficulties. She was telling me about it, and started to cry. Immediately, my instinct was to give her a hug, which I did. She kind of pushed me back, and said, no, no, it's okay. After that, our relationship was even better. Today, it has come full circle.

In addition, today I get a text from someone I do not even know, which happened to be a chain letter type thing, but it said, I have sent you an angel, pass it on. This came completely out of the blue.

Later in the day, I was talking with our school counselor, who I really didn't interact with at all this year-she's only there once a week. We had a great conversation, and I found out that she attends the same church I do. Serendipity, faith, I know this too was God. We said we would pray for each other.

Earlier, I saw an email from one of my parents. I have only emailed, that I can remember, just ONE parent, and it was to send photos or what not to her. So I was surprised, but I was busy, so I didn't read it yet. Later, I checked it on my iPhone, and she was thanking me for working with her daughter this year. What a surprise this was to get an email, and happy I was to hear this.

I am so blessed and happy to have had these moments today, all in one day. Reminders to me that God is with me, with us all, and that I hopefully, I have glorified His Name through teaching.

I guess this would be a good time to reexamine my word/prayer of the year:

God grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
And wisdom to know the difference.

Through each of these occurences, I am thinking of a common thread. Although there are probably several, I cannot help but thinking how this also relates to me wanting to be in the PRESENT. For each of these things, I had to not be in a rush or hurry. I had a LOT, still do, to do. But I took the time to talk, read, reflect, etc., and each time was blessed. These things that happened gives me the strength to keep moving forward, and to know that God is in control, and that He is WITH me. I thank the Lord for bringing me PEACE, SERENITY, and HOPE.

Inspired by...Marie Osmond?

Yes! I of course had seen her before, interviews, dolls on QVC, and so forth. Well last night, I was watching Entertainment Tonight and she got me inspired. I think the thing that made me inspired the most was the quilt she made, which I learned more this morning about, which has some of her mother's things. Also, she said that her new book which comes out in April came about after her home burned down and she lost 30 of her journals. She asked a friend/assistant? if she would write down while she remembered some of the memories, I'm assuming she had written in the journals that were destroyed. The friend sent these in, and now a book will be published based on Marie's memories she had in her journals.

I just loved her memory keeping style. This morning, I did a search, again, to find the video I had seen on ET, I had meant to try and record it later in the night thinking it would be a repeat of what I had seen. Well this morning, I had success in finding not only the videos from ET, but another one by Inside Edition that showed even MORE of her momentos throughout her room.

I share this, because I am inspired by this for several reasons.

I would LOVE to do something like this. I have wanted to sew for some time now. Not that I would necessarily want to do a quilt, but it would be great if I could learn how to sew and be able to incorporate this into my scrapbooking. As I am typing this, I am thinking about Donna Downey's new like of fabric scrapbooks. This would be a PERFECT way to start, without necessarily having to do it with a big sewing machine, or even knowing how to sew, I think. But here is the BIG IDEA, the A HA moment. She takes things that are important and signficant to her and surrounds herself with it, DISPLAYS it. I think of Peter Walsh on the decluttering show and how he tells people, if this thing means something to you, why is it buried in clutter? That it should be displayed, used, or put in a place that shows you value and care for it. This is how I see Marie displaying the things that mean something to her.

I have all sorts of things that I say mean something to me, but they are somewhere, who knows, some buried in clutter, in boxes, in storage in boxes, bags, who knows where. I want to be able to display some of the things that are meaningful to me. I know this won't happen overnight, or even maybe to have it all displayed in a year. This is not to say it's all about the THINGS. I think that many times, and definitely what I could see in Marie's room, these "things" remind us of the people and memories we shared with them that bring us joy. In the case of her mom's quilt, in was a way to remember or memorial to her. In the case of the soon to be released book, it is a reminder to record bits and pieces of your life-and reminds me to stop stressing about it all being perfect in scrapbooking and just write it down, now. So, really, displaying, making, creating, journaling, is all a way to remember the people and the memories we shared with them. Of the lessons learned, the day to day, etc.

Here is part of an interview quote from Woman's Day July 5, 2007:

I know you do a lot of quilting. Have you worked on any interesting projects recently?

I did a quilt for my mother. You know how people scrapbook? I used things like my first dress and the first necklace my dad gave her. You can’t scrapbook that, so I made it into a memory wall quilt. Her favorite song was “I Wouldn’t Trade the Silver in My Mother’s Hair for All the Gold in the World,” so I hand stitched that, and put it on a staff and music notes with strands of her hair. Just wonderful things that were memories of who my mother was as a person. It’s really a neat quilt—very hip, very young, very different, and it shows people how they can save things without putting them into a book and on a shelf.

Here are the videos, yeah for YouTube!

Looking Forward...

ETA: I decided not to stress out trying to post EVERY photo. One, just because it can get stressful in general, and then having to worrying about trying to post daily photos of the week is not good-read below for my word of the year. Also, some of the photos I've noticed are very specific about location, and this is a public blog. So I am going to delete some of the journaling and pictures from the original post. I've decided instead to TRY and post a, meaning ONE "Photo of the Week." I got this idea from another blog. Of course, I might add other photos, but I am going to try and post my favorite or a photo (in case the favorite one is too personal as to location, etc.) of the week. Hopefully, this makes sense. Photo of last week to be posted later. I am doing my 365 different, in that January 1-3 is my first "week" on the first page (of the scrapbook I am doing), and then I start a full week from January 4-10. Hopefully that makes sense. So I will have ONE photo from January 1-3, and another from January 4-10.

Happy New Year! So much to say.
First, Anthony and I spent New Year's Eve relaxing. I was tired early, so I went to sleep maybe a little after new year's on the east coast. Then at 11:58pm I immediately woke up-no kidding, and Anthony (who was still up) and I rang in 2009 together-both awake.

Second, I have chosen a new word for 2009. I got this idea from Ali Edwards . Basically you chose a word that you want to focus on for that year. I did this last year. I actually chose two, "Trust God." I tend to worry, and I wanted to relax and just Trust in God. I am not so sure I let go and let God as much as I wanted last year, so my word for this year is "Serenity." Here is the definition I looked up online.

Noun 1. serenity - a disposition free from stress or emotion
tranquility, placidity, tranquillity, repose, quiet
calm, calmness, composure, equanimity - steadiness of mind under stress; "he accepted their problems with composure and she with equanimity"
ataraxia - peace of mind
2. serenity - the absence of mental stress or anxiety
ataraxis, peace of mind, peacefulness, repose, peace, heartsease
quietude, quietness, tranquillity, tranquility - a state of peace and quiet

I am not sure if I thought of the Serenity Prayer first, or second, but I looked that up, and apparently found the ENTIRE Serenity Prayer by the person who presumably wrote the poem: Reinhold Niebuhr.

The Serenity Prayer

God, give us grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other.

Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did,
This sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it,
Trusting that You will make all things right,
If I surrender to Your will,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next.

Amen.

And here is the "traditional prayer" that I hope to remember/say as encouragement throughout the year:

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

On this site I saw a scripture that also goes with this prayer.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways acknowledge Him,
and He will direct your paths.

Proverbs 3, 5-6

I think for me, this is perfect. I hope to find serenity in letting go, letting God and trusting in HIM.

I also want to live more in the present, in the here and NOW. I love how the longer version of the prayer talks about living a day, enjoying a MOMENT at a time (I wrote about this the other day when explaining my word of the year to focus on and didn't even realize that this was also in the Serenity Prayer).

One way that I can reach this intention is through Project 365. I am still not so sure if I will be able to take a photo EVERY SINGLE DAY FOR 2009, but I have started. You can learn more about this here: . This is a "scrapper's 365 project" ALTHOUGH as the person who put the kit together says, anyone can do it. Taking a picture 365 days is not a new idea with this kit. Here is a place where this idea possibly started, although of course there probably have been others who have had this idea, just where it started to take off again.

Again, I do not know if I will be able to actually take a photo EVERDAY this year, but I have started, and we will see. It will be a good way to help me stay present and in the moment, and document everyday life. I also thought, my blog is "Snapshots of Everyday Life" and I don't have a lot of snapshots, so this would be a good way have more photos up. That said, I will try to upload photos. I am thinking of doing it weekly, instead of daily. ETA: I am going to TRY and do a "Photo of the Week" which means I'll post ONE photo from the week. Read above for more details.

If you are still reading this far, I can't believe it. I do have "goals" or intentions. I am still prioritizing, and thinking about it, so I may share at a later time.
In the meantime, here is the photo for January 1-3 2009:

Wow, that has to be my longest post ever! Take care.

Inspiration Right Now

I am feeling SUPER inspired right now. Yesterday, Anthony and I went to Barnes and Noble. I came across a book, 30 Things to Do When You Turn 30." I immediately liked what I was reading, but put it back because I figured I could find it on Amazon at a discount.

I believe, today, while looking it up, Amazon didn't have it. What? So I Google it. Finally, I find it. I go to Borders's website, and see that it is "Likely in the Store," so I put it on hold. I notice that some other Borders are sold out. I check my email before leaving for church, and get the message that it is sold out and cannot be reserved.

While going through this process, of looking for the book, before checking my email, I am feeling that this book must be limited. Come to find out, it was just published on the 21st of October. I did see that there were some other places to buy it, even cheaper, but I had the, "I want it now" feeling.

So a long story short, after already running around, I am asking Ant if he wouldn't mind going back the the Barnes and Noble where I first found the book. It is a little further out though. Then I am, thinking, maybe the Barnes and Noble (that is closer to our house) has it. I call, they do and put it on hold, and I buy it. Success!

I LOVE this book already. I only read the intro and a chapter or so, and I am thinking this is a MUST HAVE for anyone turning 30, or about to turn 30. I look at other parts in the book and see that there have been other versions written for those turning 40, 50, and 60. Here is what made me appreciate the idea behind the book even more. It says that, "The royalties generated from the sale of this book will be donated to non-profit organizations dedicated to preventing and curing cancer." WOW! This made me feel good knowing that the profits from the sale of the book would go to a good cause. Also, it says that the authors who wrote the essays for the book did so on a pro-bono basis. I like how this book is giving back in more ways than one.

So go to/call/check your local bookstore, Barnes and Noble or Borders and look for this book. Get it for yourself, or as a gift. Here is a link to buy it online: Barnes and Noble

and

Borders

An online store that sells the book at a discount: Books XYZ apparently donates some of the profits to a school of your choice
I have a feeling that there were a VERY LIMITED number of this book published.

The other inspiration, that has gotton me very excited is a book/website called, "Listography." I am thinking that I will talk about this later. For now, here is the website:

Mom's Datebook

I read this http://stacysbigpicture.typepad.com/altogether_too_happy/2008/10/the-weekend-r-1.html story on Stacy Julian's blog, a celebrity scrapbooker. After, I went immediately to my "Mom's Bag." I had it in another, but I remember it being beat up, so I put her stuff in her AFSME bag-which was newer, if not new. So I pull out a date book. I look through it, and I understand some of her notes, assume some, and not really understand others. The first thing I thought, I am so lucky to have her handwriting-the part in the above link which talked about the checkbook with the mom's signature. I have some checks too, probably signed and filled out. Anyway, while looking through her datebook, I was just so happy that besides her handwriting, she left a piece of herself, that I am blessed to have as a reminder of me of her. After running to tell Anthony most of this, I realized, that my mom kept this datebook for her. She probably didn't even think that one day I would be cherishing it. Wow! That is just deep to me. I think their are many lessons and things to take away from this. One being that you never know that something you keep, create, document, etc. will be valuable to someone one day. Another being, the everyday and simple things in life can bring great happiness to you or someone else.

Amy Rosenthal

Although I have heard about her before, and her book, "Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life," I didn't get as excited about it as I have today. This past week I learned about a new video she made, and another video she made, and watched one, but not the other. Long story short. I have been typing out ideas all morning of memories or moments for potential scrapbooks, or to create my own encyclopedias, and finally watch her more recent video. Emotions came from watching the video-thinking about this week-particularly yesterday, and the moments from the video-the second video posted.

The Torkelsons

I LOVE this television show from the 90s! It was and probably is one of, if not my favorite show. I know many people probably don't even remember it, and if they do or if they were to watch it now wouldn't be interested in it. I think the reason why I like it so much is because I when it was on, I was about the same age as the main character, Dorothy Jane, and could relate to how she was feeling and what she went through. Also, she was a romantic, which I was, and still am today.

I have most of the episodes of "The Torkelsons," as well as the spin off, "Almost Home" on vhs (yes I need/want to transfer them to DVD), except the ONE episode, really scene that I love the most. Well today, I did a search on Youtube, which I have done before for this series, and hit the jackpot because someone posted most of the episodes from these two series. Most importantly for me, the one scene/episode that I love the most. It is the first minute and so.

Three in a row...

Wow, what is this, three days in a row of blogging? Two things. One, I received a cute COLOR comic of Love is... Long story short. I collected these in college. I then sent them to Anthony. I "found" that he saved them, and started collecting them again, including books, figurines, etc. I stopped, and haven't really kept up with collecting Love is... comics and things for a couple of years now. Anyway, one of the people I have emailed, chatted with, Jey, sent me a color Love is...comic. As far as I know, they haven't been published in color in the states. So this was exciting for me, and made me happy.

Also, while reading Bethany's blog: http://documentingus.blogspot.com/2007/03/art-journal-week-10.html, she is doing a card challenge, and wrote, "Don't worry about what other people think." It made me stop. I took a sick day on Friday for personal reasons. On Monday when I went back to work, I felt that some coworkers may have thought my absence was due to extra celebrating of my birthday, and that I wasn't sick or not feeling well. I shared this with someone who I feel, "has my back" and she gave me the advice Bethany wrote on her card. This is something that I continue to work on. Even if I was taking extra time for me, resting, not feeling well, whatever, it really is none of their business. Plus, I shouldn't really worry about what they think. So this is also a note to myself: Don't Worry About What Others Think.

Who Has YOUR Back?

I had SO much fun yesterday, I seriously didn't want it to end. I was tired this morning. Anyway. Three things. One, my digital camera viewer is broken, so I haven't checked to see if photos will still come out or what. This means I will probably not post pictures anytime soon. Second, I took some pictures with my camera phone, all that we had on hand yesterday, so hopefully I can figure out how to post those pictures. Third, has to do with church service yesterday. It was the end of the sermon, where Pastor Miles read a scripture-I'll have to come back and edit and share that.

This is in the Book of Joshua, in the beginning, where Joshua is telling the people of Israel that they are getting ready to go into the promise land, be ready, and trust God. Their response to this was basically, "We got your back, Joshua." So my question to you is, who has YOUR back, and whose back to you have?

I thought about this briefly yesterday, but have been thinking more about it today. Isn't it a blessing, as the pastor was explaining yesterday, that God has given us "human people" who are here to help support us. Of course God and Jesus have our backs too. But isn't it great that we have people (relationships) that can help us go through life, and be a support system?

I have always been one, as long as I can remember that had a close circle of friends. I continue to try to surround myself with family and trusted friends to confide in, it's just me. Not to say that I do not talk and meet with other people, but that I do tend to stay to myself. To know that I have family, and friends who are there for me, and that there are people who are here to help me along the journey is a great feeling. I am so blessed to have people like this in my life, and I pray you do as well.
